"Tombodama" Japanese Lampwork glass Beads 

Tombodama, or Dragonfly balls, were named because they resemble the eyes of dragonfly. Long ago, the fire from a lamp was used to make these beads, so they are called "lampwork beads" in English.
Tombodama beads, colorful glass beads featuring floral and other patterns, are popular accessories because each one is unique. The beads are made by rolling molten glass around a steel rod until a glass ball forms. Smaller pieces of colored molten glass are then placed onto the ball to form exquisite patterns.

 

It is believed Tombodama originated in Mesopotamia about 3500 years ago. In ancient times, they were made by craftsman for members of royal families and aristocrats and were regarded as precious accessories. The techniques used in making the beads were brought to Japan via the Silk Road during the Nara period (710 – 794).

”TAMA-KANZASHI”  Kanzashi with a Tombodama bead

"Kanzashi" is a Japanese ornamental hair stick. It may be a single stick or fork-shaped stick. Especially, Kanzashi with a Tombodama on the end of the stick is called "Tama-Kanzashi".
Kanzashi were popular since the Houreki-era (1751-64) when women started to put their hair up. Previously noble ladies wore finely Kanzashi on ceremonial occasions.
Today, the Tama-Kanzashi is much sought-after in Japan and is growing in popularity throughtout in Europe as more and more people discover the beautiful art form.
