Kōrin deeply admired the work of Sōtatsu, a painter who had worked during the first half of the 17th century. Kōrin studied Sōtatsu’s style and later developed his own style.
Ogata Kōrin’s Red and White Plum Blossoms, is acclaimed to be the most accomplished masterpiece by the artist, and it is today registered as a National Treasure. This fold screens depicts two plum trees—red and white—arranged asymmetrically. A gold background accentuates the patterned designs of plum blossoms and water flow, and the overall expression makes it a set of exquisite decorative screens.

Kōrin bewunderte das Werk von Sōtatsu, einem Maler, der in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts tätig war. Kōrin studierte den Stil von Sōtatsu und entwickelte später seinen eigenen Stil.
Ogata Kōrins "Rote und weiße Pflaumenblüten" gilt als das vollendetste Meisterwerk des Künstlers und ist heute als Nationalschatz registriert. Dieses Byobu-Faltbild zeigt zwei Pflaumenbäume - rot und weiß -, die asymmetrisch angeordnet sind. Ein goldener Hintergrund akzentuiert die gemusterten Motive der Pflaumenblüten und des Wasserlaufs, und der Gesamtausdruck macht es zu einem Satz von exquisiten dekorativen Paravents.
