Shigaraki-Yaki - One of the Six Ancient Kilns in Japan

Shigaraki is a small village in Shiga, Japan, situated right below Lake Biwa and close to Kyoto. Shigaraki is one of the oldest pottery centres in Japan, and its pottery Shigaraki-yaki (Shigaraki ware) producing history dates back over 1,300 years. Shigaraki-yaki is known as one of the six ancient kilns in Japan. Traditional Shigaraki ware is known for its distinct characteristics of texture and tone which are raw, yet warm and earthy, and it is embodied the traditional wabi sabi aesthetic. In 1976 Shigaraki-yaki was designated as one of Japan’s Traditional Handicrafts.

"HIIRO" - scarlet

This Shigaraki ware coffee cup and saucer has been carefully fired in the kiln to achieve a beautiful scarlet color (HIIRO in Japanese) and is finished with a random draping pattern by bluish-white glaze.

The iron content in the Shigaraki clay oxidises during the firing process and turns reddish brown. Shigaraki clay contains just the right amount of iron to produce this scarlet color. Even if the same Shigaraki clay is used, the colour of the finished product will differ, depending on the firing method and the degree of firing, and this is the charm of Shigaraki ware.

*There are differences in color shades and pattern due to handmade and kiln conditions.

- Artisan Collection from Shigaraki, Japan
- Brand Producer: Marui Seitou in Shigaraki

Marui Seitou is a third generation Shigaraki-yaki (Shigaraki ware) producer based in the town of Shigaraki in Shiga Prefecture. At Marui Seito, their craftsmen are committed to creating a wide range of pottery pieces with unremitting efforts to meet the needs of people since the Taisho period. Hechimon is Marui Seito's signature Shigaraki-yaki tableware collection. The brand name, Hechimon, is derived from the Japanese word used by the Shigaraki-yaki craftsmen for "one of a kind" or unique things. Just as no two people are the same, no two Shigaraki-yaki pieces will be identical.
