Potter's teapot Hotta Takumi (Kenji Tôen 憲 児 陶 苑) entirely handcrafted.

This stunning unglazed dot-cutting design Kyusu teapot has a well-balanced round shape and is made from multiple colours of clay kneaded into a white clay base using the Nerikomi (練り込み) technique. 

The surface is covered with a soft, light green layer of soil, and round dots are carefully scraped off, revealing the marbled white colour underneath. This traditional pattern is called mizutama (水玉 - water drop).

This work of art, which requires a great deal of skill and precision, is the creation of Takumi Hotta, an experienced second-generation ceramist from the “Kenji Tōen” workshop. Born in 1985, Hotta Takumi (堀田 拓見) continues his father's practice of specialising in Nerikomi wares.

Nerikomi - clay layering

Nerikomi is a decorative process established in Japan that involves stacking colored clay and then cutting it through the cross-section to reveal a pattern that can then be used as an applied decoration.

Plates of different clays colored with stains or oxides are stacked, folded, pressed into logs, cut into slices and arranged in a pot. In this way, the numerous stacked layers appear as fine, wavy lines that are embedded in a surrounding color in the finished object.
