Gold leaf is applied by hand to the surface of porcelain by skilled Kutani craftsmen, and the firing process creates a unique and interesting cracked pattern. It is difficult to achieve a uniform thickness without losing the luster. This advanced technique is called “金箔彩 kinpakusai (gold leaf painting),” and is one of the most popular techniques of Kutani-ware.

Each of the large and small cups is coloured light green and red under the gold leaf, which further enhances the effect of the cracked pattern.
